My 1st client was through the NACHI website before we had the “inspector locator”. The client called me from the list on the NACHI website. Since then, I get calls from mortgage companies from out of state looking for termite inspections in my area for refinancing after finding my name on NACHI. So far, my membership has paid for itself.

I am chuffed to bits (yeah I know that’s English) I got my first e-mail today trough the find an inspector on our web site and it looks like I’ve booked a $485 inspection (including extras) way to go Nick & Chris

I’m glad to see it generating inspection work for our members.

Members can email me up to 10 different zip codes and I will add them to your Find an Inspector geographic searches. See What's New section about the 4th or 5th item down.

Hey all,
I just wanted to give a heartfelt thank you to the staff of NACHI. Your locator got me my first call last Wednesday. I had to pass it on to another inspector though as my Dad passed away (unexpectedly) the same day. Thank you Nick, Chris, committee members, and others behind the scenes.
Your work has really boosted my morale!

Nick and others,
I am just in the beginning stages of exploring the prospect of entering this business. I have been using your site extensively and commend you all for not leaving any stones unturned when it comes to information about the HI industry.
As someone looking for the best place to eventually spend my advertising dollars, I have experimented with several different "inspector locators" that are out there. I was surprised to find that in my market your locator only produced one inspector while ASHI listed about 90. I expected just the opposite considering NACHI has fewer "barriers to entry" than ASHI. Is this because your locator is so new?

What do you mean “NACHI has fewer barriers to entry than ASHI?” Our entrance exam is a barrier to every other inspector that wants to join NACHI. ASHI accepts anyone.

I stand corrected…I meant to say to become Full Members of ASHI. I realize anyone can become a Candidate. (For the record I am not a member of any organization nor do have any allegiance to any particular HI organization).
So, to get back on topic, can anyone answer my original question?

As far as I can tell ASHI has 3 times NACHI’s membership numbers. Mostly because:
-They've been around longer.
-They don't delete inspectors that are no longer in business for at least a year.
-They have no entrance requirements and so can accept more inspectors.
-They count candidates.
As far as we can tell, 3800 live phone numbers exist in their roster. Since that check, their branding campaign has caused less inspectors to renew or join. I can't figure a rate, but they now have negative growth (losing membership).
Our rate of membership growth, if maintained, should catch them by Spring 2004.
I will say that we are certainly larger than ASHI in terms of membership benefits provided. Association roster size should mean little to you, the individual inspector.

Great information. Thanks for your responses.
I do think NACHI should work on getting ALL of its members posted on the Inspector Locator. Not only could it result in more leads for the inspectors listed, but it would help build NACHI's exposure and credibility. Why not make it mandatory for members?

Brad:
I'll try to delicately answer your question without opening up an old can of worms. Here goes:
In general, we at NACHI want to make as little as possible "mandatory for members." I would say that outside our entrance exam, Code of Ethics, Continuing Education Policy, and Standards of Practice... very little else is "mandatory."
"Mandatory" is almost a 4 letter word. We are trying to stay as free as possible.
