As long as the hatch cover is 5/8 type X gypsum, it’s all good. On the other hand if it’s a wood product, then that is IMO considered a void in the firewall.

Kevin, I believe that 1/2" is adequate when no habitable space above the ceiling.

I hate those also,Christopher. I try to use my own small telescoping ladder if I can.
