Found this “adjustable” metal pier under a deck. Takes regular maintenance but doesn’t require a footer to be installed deep to the frost line.
As long as the handle is removed, it’s fine.
Damn, where did I leave that jack last time I used it.
Until the seals fail from corrosion.
Nah, that’s a Big Red 20 Ton. The only bottle jack approved for structural use. Besides, there’s nothing under there to cause corrosion that I can see.

Two of the most popular chemicals used in the pressure treatment of wood include copper azole and alkaline copper quaternary, both of which are highly corrosive .
I’m joking of course, lol. The water alone will do it without the chemicals. Just having some fun over here.
Unfortunately that’s not the first time I’ve seen that.
It does look like someone needs to find the handle and give it a few pumps.
Observation: Big Red 20-ton jack not properly set.
Recommendation: Find handle or big screwdriver and apply approximately 4.5 pumps. Ensure bleeder screw is tight after adjustment.
Kinda looks like it’s “frozen” in place!
Now Scott tells us…
I think people are underestimating the Big Red 20 Ton. Here’s a review I grabbed off Amazon where you can get this baby for $55. Lou likes it.
WOW they are big spenders. Just get a scissor jack from the local pull a part or the junk car in the driveway.
I’ll take Big Red over that wood post/beam contraption in the middle.
Yeah, let that ram rust in place and it won’t drop.
The block looks consistent with their other work, too.
Cheaper than a PT post these days.
