I’m posting this to help anyone preparing to pass the NHIE because so many people helped me. This is stuff I did that helped me pass the exam on my first try.
First of all, I am not in any trades; I come from a sales and admin background, so you DO NOT need to be in the trades to be successful.
Tips:
I hand wrote over 400 flashcards and went through them countless times every chance I got.
I went through AHIT for the schooling, which if I’m honest, helped about 20%.
I used Quizlet.com for digital flashcards and spent hours on that site—also, it’s free. Be careful though, as some answers may be outdated, incorrect or state specific.
I filled three legal pads full with handwritten notes while studying and read over them.
I became a Nachi member, and took courses I was struggling with—electrical, HVAC. And the “every inspector should know…” course.
Took the practice test here multiple times. And went through most of the practice questions—there are a lot.
Lastly, I did lots of research on the web about how systems worked, i.e. watched youtube videos on HVAC systems, house framing, how residential electricity is run etc. As many folks here have said, if you don’t understand how house systems work and just try to memorize stuff, you will likely fail the exam.
AND, I took my time and read every question and potential answer on the exam slowly and thoroughly before choosing my answer. Also, be prepared for “choosing the best answer" scenarios, they were the trickiest.
That’s pretty much it.
Good luck!
