I've never seen one that hung from the ceiling before.

Was there a flue pipe? The reason I ask is this looks like an outdoor fireplace that someone has “rigged” inside for a unique looking fireplace experience. My mind is doing mental gymnastics with all the possible disastorous problems this could create.

Yep…goes strait up thru the roof. Three chains attached to roof support beams hold it in place.

If it is hanging by chains, wouldn’t it swing?

Is the flue flexible?

Not if they are at an angle…Think of a tripod upside-down.

Should it not have a hearth?

That is an interesting point. I thought about that, and did note that, but didn’t really know how the unit could have a hearth, as it would defeat the purpose of the design. Think about it…another 18" around the enitre fireplace…that would indeed take up a substantial amount of space.

I would think it would be heat / flame resistant material beneath and around the fire place, and not wood flooring. Just my thoughts

I see these occasionally (similar styles anyway). They do need fire resistant material beneath them.

It must have been recently installed because I don’t see any burn marks on the floor. No matter how careful you are sparks always seem to find a way out of the fire box. There should be some kind of fire resistant material below the fireplace.

Haven’t seen one like that in a long time. Very 1970’s sorta Austin Powers.

I kinda like it. not a good heat source just “ambiance”. the fire tiles under (I’d say at least a 6’ x 6’) would ease me a little, but I think I’d still go with an electric foe (fake) flame.
