Induced Draft Fan.

If the unit is LP or Natural Gas fired, the pipe should terminate at the home exterior.

I agree. It is a gas unit, I’m just wondering what they were trying to do with that thing.

You’ve got that right.

They have a furnace (also gas) chimney that is so badly corroded that there are pinholes in it inside the attic space. It's a good thing that this house is in FL. The furnace doesn't get too much use.

Also, the vermin have added quite a bit of ventilation by chewing some well placed holes in the walls.

This is a power vent water heater, it eliminates the need to have a chimney vent or a flue thru the roof.

But it still needs to terminate thru an outside wall and maintain clearences from windows, doors, etc.

What happens when “Dennis” knocks out the power and the fan

doesn't work -- and the water heater comes on?

Most of them are equipped with a 24 volt air pressure switch. The unit will not begin the ignition sequence until the direct vent fan system is up to normal operating speed. Great question Jae!
