Powering America With Clean Energy

In addition to solar, wind, geo-thermal, and other sources of green energy technology, we will soon be able to finally add nuclear to the equation. :+1:

Seems like a no-brainer to build more nukes instead of burning fossil fuels. The inherent fear about terrorism at one of these plants needs to be overcome first. Maybe the newer designs and technology can get us over the hump.

I’m happy to see it.

The OP article doesn’t indicate any plans to build one. Just says the government approves. The government also promotes / believes global warming is caused by CO2 which is demonstrably false.

Our coal powered plants are the cleanest in the world. While they ban coal here, China continues to build dirty coal plants at record pace.

Here you go Bob.

Kairos Power, an engineering company located on West Tower Avenue in Alameda, has started construction on its Hermes Low-Power Demonstration Reactor, the first non-light-water reactor to be permitted in the U.S. in over 50 years. The reactor will be located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, and is expected to be operational in 2027.

Not anymore. A few years back China was building coal plants at a record pace, but after having to deal with thick smog smog due to the burning of coal, they realized they were choking their own cities, now they’re scaling that back and charging full speed ahead on renewables and SS battery technology. We can’t let them be the leaders in this arena.

Checking out a few of these pictures, it’s easy to see why they’re changing their tune so fast.

After building at record pace for so many years, it was bound to slow down as the demand was met.

Glad to see some real progress. New, safer, smaller (scalable) reactor designs have been in the works for decades. However, choosing Oak Ridge,TN (nuclear central) as the location means they are quite wary of public acceptance, which is the true hurdle yet to come.

I’ve had my own maintenance company for 30 plus years in Florida and never dealt with gas or oil furnaces or boilers so this was a hard course for me but I got it now and I strongly recommend if you are weak in any field to take it as many times as you need to be confident with that field of knowledge, it will only help you in the long run

Interesting. So much for the myths and lies coming from some for nothing more than political gain.

I am not surprised, we all knew Biden was lying to get elected.

Well, he did want to cut the emissions of fossil fuels IMO too drastically, but we all know the reality is we need cleaner fossil fuels, NG, as a bridge to renewables that are powering the country. These are massive changes, and they take time to incorporate.

On the home inspection side of this issue: Home energy use is and will become recognized as an important component of energy use, on the conservation side of the equation vs production. Being knowledgeable in this area through numerous educational sources, including NACHI CI courses, only makes one a better HI. There is also demand, although limited, for energy audits through the Inflation Reduction Act. This is a natural side gig for any HI in a market where there is a demand for energy audits and there isn’t another company performing them nearby. One source of clients is soft marketing to your own HI clients.

Good points, and I agree in the sense of using LED bulbs, HE heat pumps, and geo thermal systems are a great way to conserve energy.

But I also think that producing one’s own energy with the use of solar is gaining a lot of traction. I see solar panels more and more on the roof tops of homes in my area, I think that one of the biggest game changers on the horizon will come once solid-state batteries are massed produced and people have an efficient and cheap way to store the power from the solar panels.

There are some other technologies that may or may not come to fruition as well.

I’m also keeping an eye on these wind turbines.

Continuing, sealing air leaks, insulation issues: Missing insulation at rim joists and exposed foundation areas are significant heat loss locations. Even a poorly insulated and poorly air sealed attic scuttle can reduce the overall R-value of the attic by R-3 or more. Poorly installed insulation can reduce the R value by 50% in some cases. All those items are the low hanging fruit that should be addressed before considering heat pumps, power generation methods, window replacement, and other marketed and costly improvements. An energy audit identifies and prioritizes the various improvements under consideration. Understanding those issues as a HI is a significant value-added service, whether you report it in your report or simply go over the issues during your walk through.
