Waiting to see the votes on this. And the discussion.

Looks like I’m in the minority so far…interesting. I’m curious to see where this goes.

Makes you wonder what the person was thinking about when they cut out those sections. eusa_doh.gif

Curious as to what else was altered in the attic space.

The correct answer may be a regional “thang” as the absolute correct answer for my area is not there. There is one close but no cigar here.

Hmm. A truss is an engineered system. To alter it would require re-engineering. Period.

Am I wrong?

What is your correct answer?

Yes I also recognize that in an ideal world they should not be modified at all, but sometimes they need to be to accomadate mechanical systems etc and when this needs to happen the manufacturers engineers need to put up a stamped ammendment plan. In fact it is not too unusual to see these plans particulary on manufactured homes.

OK let battle commence ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)

Your termites do nicer work than those in Ohio. Are they required to be certified in your area? ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)

Gerry, there are two ways of reading the question as written. I would agree that an engineer may design a modification to the trusses and that his/her design would be permitted.

Otherwise, no you can't even look at a truss the wrong way without violating it.

I agree with Gerry’s “best” answer. As a PE I could design a modification to a truss and stamp the drawings. Perfectly okay.

But that picture does NOT look like an engineered modification. So I think you only get partial credit Gerry (duck) ... ![icon_lol.gif](upload://zEgbBCXRskkCTwEux7Bi20ZySza.gif)

Hi to all,

Rob, what's this all about, a PE agreeing with a lowly Home inspector ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif) I guess I must be learning some thing from you (shock horror )

Well raise my rent … I think by inference Gerry actually admitted that home inspections could be a sub-practice area of engineering. I have to go lie down now … icon_lol.gif

“sub-practice”

Playing off of Robert's post, HOW you call this will determine the line.

1 Truss has been cut recommend a PE examine.

2 Truss has been cut --- unsafe, violation or other 'expert' comment.
