I have never personally seen this, but I have heard of a lot of people doing it. It really does make me ill. Great picture.

You know they already designed these in a way that you must wire in the photo eyes, you can not simple put a jumper across the terminals.

Now they are going to need to make the photos only work when the are at least 8' apart. ![icon_rolleyes.gif](upload://iqxt7ABYC2TEBomNkCmZARIrQr6.gif)

Easer still would be making it so the beam would need to be broken at least once before the door can be shut.

So they do this because it’s mandatory to hook up the photo eyes to get the unit to work?

There has got to be a reason they don’t want the photo eyes near the ground…but I couldn’t imagine what it is?

I saw that twice last week. One of the sets was actualy taped together in the attic, just above the opener.

Hey Blaine,

Had the same thing. Lens to lens, can't find the picture otherwise I would post it. Mounted high up on the bracket.

Yes to the first and because it is slightly easer and faster to 'install' them at the unit.

Some of the installers get paid by the job and are less than professional. ![icon_rolleyes.gif](upload://iqxt7ABYC2TEBomNkCmZARIrQr6.gif)

I find it is usually because the homeowner installed the opener and couldn’t figure out how to align the eye, or just didn’t think they were necessary!!

Looks like a great way to stop really tall spiders and ants from ever being killed by your garage door opener. icon_biggrin.gif

Wow Mike...thats very noble. Any other neat tricks that you show people?

Oh, well that makes it OK then. I've never killed anybody, but I've taught mentally retarded people how to use PCP and fire fully automatic weopons, but hey....I didn't pull the trigger, right?

Mike you make me sick. What little respect I had for you is gone. You should have your license revoked for bull s#!t like this.

I wanted to say so much more here, but I am speechless due to your stupidity.

Ryan, Calm down!

Garage door eyes are proof that lawyers are interfering with natural selection. Survival of the fittest.

Example:
Owls can see for miles these days because all the owls with poor eyesite didn't eat as good over the centuries as did the ones with good eyesite, therefore having worse health and less baby owls (with bad eyesite). Eventually the blind owls all died off leaving only the ones with good eyesite and their offspring.

Had there been lawyers protecting the blind owls their numbers would be greater but the species as a whole would be less capable than it it today.

I personally hate any device designed to save a dummy from himself.

I won’t comment on Ryan’s comments, but James, I have to agree with him. Codes are adopted for reasons. The reasons those photo cells are around is because too many kids died. Those kids were not all morons, they just did not know any better. Taking the easy way out is is simply being LAZY. The person that did this could well be criminally prosecuted if anyone were to be injured as a result. As well as the person that taught them how.

Around this county, Fire Sprinklers are required by code in EVERY new home. Lot's of people are critics of sprinklers, saying they cause water damage more than anything(a myth). So is it excuseable for a builder to show someone how to make a "dummy" sprinkler system to save them from water damage?

I think Ryan is right. Installations like that are inexcusable and unbecoming of a licensed professional.

Daniel,

Of course you're right. The garage door opener is probaly a poor example of the point I was making. Just don't get me started about "unintended acceleration" which has been proven to be caused by "pedal mis-application" If someone can't properly use the pedals in their car we should make it harder for them to drive (like take their license/insurance) not easier.

I actually believe the auto-impact reversing feature is more of a potential lifesaver than the electric eyes, especially when you see an installation like this one.

BTW... I dont check its resistance with a block of wood, either... I know, I know, its the only approved methodology. But, I ruin less garage doors and openers this way. Besides, a block of wood cant tell you how much pressure is being exerted.
