Range hood vent material

We are building a new home and I am doing much of the work myself. I have one job I am really dreading. That’s connecting the Range hood vent line.

It a commercial quality fan mounted on the roof. I wanted it mounted on the back because of it size so that is doesn't show from the road. This puts it 6-8 behind the stove. It uses a 10" pipe and routing the pipe is going to be interesting to say the least.

My question is for those more learned than me, is there an approved (read safe) flexible duct that I can use to connect this? Rigid metal will be a problem to install for sure!

Jeff,

Do not use flexible metal ducting.![](upload://7GiJHa9oLOP2YGWNNJqyitFikFi.gif)

All ducting material from the range hood should be rigid. Flex duct is dangerous and not allowed. It?s not smooth inside and will trap grease inside the ridges and become a potential fire hazard. Flex duct also causes severe air turbulence and will significantly reduce the efficiency of the hood by 50%.

This is your typical rigid duct installation..

Happy crawling and cutting!

NO.

As David said, do not use flexible pipe.

This is for a range hood, which will be handling grease laden air. The inside of the duct must be smooth and installed so as not create grease traps.

Admittedly, this air will not be as grease laden as at a commercial restaurant (hopefully, anyway), but must be installed so as to not be a hazard when the air is grease laden.

Gee thanks. icon_rolleyes.gif You guys are no fun.

I hate working in attics and especially since it is getting so warm. But of course what you say makes total sense. Think I may call someone on this job!

Thanks for the input.
