Slight sway on roof. The rafters had also pulled away in attic. The section of rafters here were not meeting at the ridge. There was no ridge board either. 1940's house

If this is the same house as in the structural forum (bowed basement wall), there are some serious problems.

That is a classic "foundation failure" tell tale sign when you have the combination of foundation and attic displacement.

This could be a structural issue at best. Even worse, it may be a soils issue.

Call out the experts on this. You don't want the bill.
