when a 2x6 rafter which is nailed to a 2x6 ridge in the attic is pulling away

from each other to where you can actually see the nails between the half inch gap looking up , is this considered structual ? how is this pulled back together or is it. my guess is house settlement caused this and maybe

attaching a spacer board and inserting a metal hinge would do the tricks.

your thoughts…

Rafael,

Were there collar ties in place?
Did you inspect for bowing on the exterior walls?

Probably not going to pull that back in place. It could even have been left that way by the framer.

Figure a repair to be twice as strong as the original. Put two boards on both sides of it like an L and nail it up real good.

Sounds unusual. Rafters are set on the ridge plate before being nailed, so it seems to be an indication of movement in the framing.

Rafael,

You say...There were no Rafters?

How could that be? Absolutely impossible.

rafter collar ties or bowing of the walls (the topic is “2x6 Rafters”).

Bowing of the walls would be an indication of rafter spread, which is not what I am talking about. Movement of the framing at the ridge can be an indication of inadequate collar/ridge ties in higher wind areas, or possibly frame distortion from unusual movement. That type of assessment is beyond a home inspection, so it would just be flagged as a concern or defect.

Just my opinion and 2-nickels ... ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)
