Siding Defect - How bad is it?

New to inspection, still getting certified! Took a gander at my own townhouse and WOW.

Here we have a crawlspace vent here on masonry with vertical wood siding. Obviously the wood is decaying all around this and the house in general, it’s missing caulk, however my question is -

there’s about a two inch gap between the siding and the masonry. You can even see the nail where it wants to go into the siding but can’t. Are we just witnessing the air gap here that’s become too pronounced or is there more to this? What does this tell you guys?

Welcome Natalie.

It looks to me like they applied furring strips to the masonry to attach the siding to and it is all coming loose. Plus, some nails are too long for the application.

Fascinating! That makes total sense. I now have ‘furring strip’ in my mental inventory  Thank you!!

It needs a little love! Just needs some scrapping, maybe some wood replacement, caulk and painting! Yes, it is a poor trim job around that vent.

I was thinking the same thing…

Looks like old vertically applied board and batten siding with peeling paint.
There is an exposed gap where the wood siding was affixed/secured to furring strips and brick masonry veneer that will allow rodent, vermin and weather to enter.

The window frame has dry rot. Appears the window screen does not operate any longer.

Need some images from further back place to see examples of the full sidewall.
