Smart Thermostat

Woke up this morning and the Ecobee thermostat has changed its human interface. Just when you get comfortable with something, they go and change it.

Fairly self explanatory, despite the two pages of instructions displayed before I could bump up the heat. Instead of a slider on the right where you push the setting up or down you now tap on the temperature and select a + or - to the right until the temperature is where you want, then tap the temperature # again to confirm.

It also snowed (light dusting) nothing to worry about.

I’ve had Nest for 5 years now and have no problems at all. My brother had a few problems with his (cheaper unit) but got it straightened out.

I also have Nest cameras, door bell, and Nest Protect detectors.

My home system consists of some zoned Fujitsu equipment and thermostats which basically suck but it’s Maui so I generally just kick them on when it gets a bit warm so I don’t have a lot of recent firsthand t-stat experience.

As it pertains to inspecting, I know the Nest pretty well and the other common ones BUT… WTF is with some of the off-brand thermostats out there? Some are just plain awful to figure out and use. They’re slow to respond to your touch. The menus and functions and impossible to get through and it’s just amazing such a POS made it to market. One I remember even needs a stylus type pen! Who wants to un-holster a pen to turn the furnace on? And I can tell you my kids would lose that sucker in less than a day. Maybe I’m old-fashioned but I don’t really know what was wrong with a single 3-position switch and a dial. Kind of like dimmers… I won’t even start with that rant.

I installed a Sensi during covid to fine tune the temperature and it is a solid, easy solution… the feature I really like is the ability to control the fan apart from the heat/cool cycle. My fan runs 20 minutes every hour regardless if it’s in heat or cool mode.

What is the advantage of that? Apparently (I looked it up) Ecobee can be set to do the same.

During covid I installed an ultraviolet light in my return duct to help keep the air free from virus and bacteria, allowing the fan to run independently kept the air circulating regardless of temperature demand. I like that the home never holds cooking odor and always smells fresh.
