[ Image:You won't believe these splices ] This actually came from the panel in romex to a J box in the cellar ceiling (without a cover) then K&T up to the top of the steps, then back down to a ceiling light (with a switch cut into the K&T, another splice leads via romex to a kitchen outlet (the blue box at left) and one overhead w/K&T in surface conduit to the "More K&T in conduit" splices for the overhead light at top of stairs and I don't know where the other splice went.
They'd had a fire in the attic because, as the seller stated, "a trouble light (being used for attic lighting) fell into a box of clothes". Guess how the attic was still being lit. Ya got it. A trouble light on an extension cord from the second floor.

hi Erby,
You have far more patience than I do when I see that many violations and unsafe wiring practices I stop counting and defer the whole mess to a licensed electrical contractor ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)
Like yourself I love inspecting older properties ( we have a lot in my area going back to the 18th Century) I quite often joke with clients that I am a real estate archiologist.
BTW, I hope you wrote up that offensive wall paper ![icon_wink.gif](upload://ssT9V5t45yjlgXqiFRXL04eXtqw.gif)
