Dan … Ya have me by a year as I started with a contractor in 1979, then inspections, and on to engineering. I went the PE route since I wanted to also evaluate and design buildings and repairs. Since you have been around the block too, you would probably get a kick out of some of my “flashlight and screwdriver” comments … icon_lol.gif


Harvey ... I think that ones a tough call just based on a pic. I agree with Mike that it looks like a band-aid, but what are the concerns? Why did it look like it was installed, and did you notice any indications of sagging or movement of the roof framing or ceiling joists? Was that posted down to a bearing wall below? When in doubt, or if your gut reaction tells you something is wrong beyond a simple repair, call for an evaluation by an engineer.

Just my 2 nickles as an engineer also ...
