For those termite treaters, could you please explain what the chemical is that is on the joists and rim joist? It was on the rim joist and the floor joists for about a 20 foot section and out about 1 foot on each of the floor joists.

Dave,
It is hard to tell from the photo. If it is a white residue I would say it is a wettable powder for carpenter ant treatment. If it is kinda shiny I would say it is slime left behind by slugs hanging out in the crawlspace.

I would have to agree it looks like slug slime. Pest control companies do use a chemical called timbor that when sprayed on the wood and it dries it looks shiny and it has a crystallized look on the wood< though I do not believe this is the case just plain old slugs. Is there any other spots like this in the crawl space mainly on the block or crawl door?

Considering the photo is real small and it is hard to see. I am certified and have been in the state of WV for quite some time as well as performing over 600 termite inspections I see this all the time it is slug trails, but if you have a larger picture I would like to see that as well. Maybe I am missing something.

Ask our own Barry Stangel. He’s been around the game for a very long time, is a member of NACHI and NYNACHI, and offers a kick-a$$ course on WDI inspections and treatment.
