Anyone ever hear of using WD-40 as a tile grout sealer. I have run into more than a couple of older tile guys, who do great work, who swear by it. They say to spray it on, real thick, let it dry for an hour or so and wipe off the exess with windex and a towel. Just don’t spray it on paint.

They say that it is much cheaper than silicone sealer.

Comments?

WD stands for water displacement. It may work, but I would not want that smell in my bathroom.

I have used many different methods to seal the grout lines on tile jobs. WD 40 works well, accept for the smell. Pledge or equal furniture polish or “furniture oil” works well too and has a much more pleasant smell, but you need to reapply often as water stops beading. but cut and dry, if the process is done correctly (that is, letting the mastic dry 24 hours so as to stop letting fumes off that will cause grout to become porous and allow moisture in) and the grout is at proper consistency and allowed to “air” for 10 min. before applying, than in theory you won’t need to seal it. sealing it will make it last longer, but if you use anything other than “grout & tile sealer” chances are the homeowner won’t keep up with it anyway and you only add the life of the sealer to the life of the wall. maybe a year. not enough to say it’s worth it.
