Joseph is right.


One of the byproducts of burning fossil fuels is water vapor. The water vapor can condense on the chimney. A wet chimney can rust out the metal flue pipes. And there are also some acids like nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide involved that can hurry this rusting along.
