I am curious am I the only inspector that has to deal with vertical dryer vents. We have city inspectors that allow vertical dryer vents installed in new construction. My thinking is just one big fire trap but have been unable to fight city hall on this item. So we just inform the client of the potential problems and move on to the next one. Any thoughts out there on this one.

Don’t argue with an idiot someone watching may not be able to tell the difference.

About ? of our dryer vents are vertical and exit through the roof. They must be constructed of smooth walled galvanized duct with no more than one 90 degree elbow at each end. Usually the lint just piles up at the base of it and a shop vac works well enough.

My dryer was a gas dryer too, and started to smell “hot” if you know what I mean.

I removed my dryer vent flue, and it was so clogged I had to use a water hose with a nozzle on the end to clear it.

Wouldn’t be a bad idea to mention to homeowners on older homes they may want to clean the flue.

No sheet metal screws allowed. Traps lint. Watch out for plastic duct, obviously a serious fire hazard.

They should not exceed 15 feet in length including elbows or they need to be ran in 5 inch pipe that’s how they call it on new construction in my area.
