A friend of mine recently purchased a new home, I did the inspection. He calls me a few weeks later and asks if I would have any ideas about a problem he was encountering with his brand new Maytag washing machine.
First he has a water softener.
The machine does fine except on dark clothes cold water, the clothes come out with a residue on them. Maytag has come out and attempted to trouble shoot the problem, solutions:15 different laundry detergents, cold water is to cold, water softener causing water to be too soft, water is too hard, to large of a load, discharge drain is restricted. To his defense he has worked with Maytag for 3 months, finally told them give me my money back. Bought a new washer high end unit of another brand and guess what, he has the same problem.
Water Softener Company has confirmed the settings and the water test correctly.
Open to suggestions!

The problem may be he is using too much soap. As it was explained to me when I was thinking about purchasing a water purifier/softening system for my home, it has something to do with the process that softens the water. Personally I don’t like the softening effects as you never seem to know when all of the soap has been washed off during a shower.
Try running the machine with no soap for a couple of loads and see what happens.

Mike,
I used to have the same problem with my washer, a whirlpool, when I used only cold water to wash clothes. On top of that it was well water and extremely cold, most of the time the detergent would not even dissolve.
You can tell your friend to try washing the clothes in warm water and to turn down the hot side of the faucet until the water is room temperature and use the cold rinse. When it happened to me I also switched to liquid detergent and used that in conjunction with the warmer water. It was good enough to fix the residue problem.

Gerry,
No. I wash it, dry it, fold it and then throw it back on the floor where I found it!!
