looks like the burner “flamed out” in the past. sometimes if the burner malfunctions and the fuel/air mix is way off, the flame goes from a nice little blue, to a big yellow and drafts out the access. sound like the heater is at the end of its service life anyway. i’d recomend a pro. inspect it and do a fuel/heat efficiancy test. icon_cool.gif

Where do I start? Lets see, no PRV pipe, and the water heater looks to be as old as Barbara Walters. Oh, and lets not forget that the water heater is trying to burn the house down. Also looks like water has leaked at some point.

At this point I tell the buyer to scratch up 400 bucks and replace it, or get the sellers to do it.

Recommend replacement!

i never like to “tell” someone to buy anything. i like when a specialist tells them to there face and gets the job to install it. i leave a bus. card on the water heater so he knows who got him the job. cheap i know, but usualy works. hey i need to feed the kids too. but he’s right it’s probably junk. icon_cool.gif

My question is how old is the furnace in the background? Is it causing the very very very old water heater to backdraft?

Definite evaluation by HVAC tech and or plumber.

Flame “roll out” when the water heater comes on. Call the professional.

The cause doesn’t matter.

That’s one heater I would not want on my conscience.

The fire is supposed to be on the inside.Period.

Not only is there soot at the pilot/burner access panel there is also soot above the pressure relief valve.

That heater is telling you everything you need to know… Listen.

I call it like it is. This is a slam dunk, recommend replacement, don’t waste your money on a plumber to tell you it needs replaced.

My concern is if you put a new one in and the furnace is sucking out the water heater combustion air.

Agree water heater is toast.
