What are your tax requirements in your state?

I’m on a mission to database the exact taxes that home inspectors are required to charge their clients for inspection services in every state. The reason is because I’m building a software for inspectors that will include invoicing.

Kindly let me know:

  • your state
  • tax type (name),
  • it’s percentage,
  • and most importantly, weather you are required to charge two tax types?. If you’re required to charge two types, do they need to be delineated in your invoice?

Thanks for your input

What kind of software is this going to be?

Hi Dominic, the software will be built for inspectors to run their business from end-to-end including scheduling, contract sending, report writing, and invoicing.

Please feel free to help out by letting me know the tax requirements in your state.

Maryland pays income taxes only. There is no tax on services, thus no additional charge to customers.

Thank you, Robert.

Currently there’s no tax on home inspection services in Ohio. I hope it stays that way for a few more years.

No sales tax on inspections in MN yet, although some other services are taxed. I did hear on the radio the other day that they are considering lowering the state sales tax rate, but adding more services to the list of taxable services. So, it could change in the future.

FL has no tax on inspection services.

I don’t think there are any states that require you to charge taxes on services

Washington.
No State Income Tax, so you pay tax on all labor/services.

Taxable services in Ohio include landscaping and lawn care services, private investigation and security services, building maintenance and janitorial services, repair and installation of taxable tangible personal property, personal care services such as manicures, hair removal, and tattoos, towing services, and laundry

Red states, blue states, it doesn’t matter, they all get their revenue through taxes one way or another.

Yup… and the key here is that none of those services listed, typically are selling products that would generate a tax revenue. State gotta collect taxes from someone to pay for their FREE services to the less fortunate.

No taxes on services/labor in Colorado. Since deliverables are a “complimentary” part of the service, no sales tax…
