What do you call the area of the chimney on the exterior that has a slant? It typically will have a stone shelf or masonry wash above to seal the brick.
TIA
I believe called part of the firebox
Ok thanks Roy. I was hoping to have a terminology that specifically described the spot, for my client to pass along to mason for a quote. I see some diagrams on google reference it as a mantle.
Never seen that called a mantle.
Me neither, except on google, that’s why i am asking. I agree that it is part of the firebox, but it seems to be that in the world of masons, there is a specific terminology to this spot beyond “the slant thingy”.
Chimney rake, corbel, shoulder, hip.
Nailed it- Thanks JR
and here I was thinking moldy angled part was the answer…
That works!
A chimney shoulder forms the outside surface of each side of the smoke chamber . The purpose of the chimney shoulder is to decrease the width of a chimney that surrounds an open firebox to the size of a chimney that surrounds a chimney liner.
