What's the rating of this panel?

OK we agree now back to the original question what size is the panel 150 or 200 and how did you get the answer .
The smallest link in the system is what gives the service size.

The same identical service panel is sold with either a 150 amp breaker or a 200 amp breaker. That is where the different numbers come from. The service is either 150 or 200 amp depending on the installed breaker as previously stated. This is 150 amp service.

The main panel, which is the metal box that is also sometimes called the load center or enclosure, is typically marked with a label giving the rating for that main panel, and it can exceed the ratings of the main disconnect or entrance conductors, but not be exceeded by them.
I’ve just never run into one that listed different amperage ratings on the same label. I’m after the panel rating, not the service rating, which would include the things Barry mentioned.

Enclosure/load centers/whatever term you want to use to describe them (I’ll use “main panels”) are rated according to the maximum amount of heat they can withstand without failure, so you can’t really have a dual rating for a main panel. A main panel with a label stating that it’s rated for 200 amps can contain a disconnect rated at 200 amps or anything smaller and the same with the entrance conductor.

The question is what size is the panel so if as you say it can be used on a 200 amp service then the answer is it is a 200 amp panel.
We all seem to agree on service size .

Not really, since there was no defect, I just like to nail down this sort of thing for future reference.

No, the panel rating can exceed that of the main disconnect.

No markings visible, most of the SEC was hidden behind the upper panel. It was copper and could have been rated 150 or 200. Home built in 2012.
Not that it matters for panel rating but it would if the SEC rating exceeded that of the 150 amp disconnect.

Kent,
sorry for the confusion on my part
the max panel board rating is 200 amps
it’s printed on the label
the other items i mentioned do not affect the label info

What Bob said.

Box says clearly to see Main Breaker… So it’s the 150.

Barry, the problem is… so is 150 amps. and they say the same thing except for a catalog number. The label has three different catalog numbers, two of which say 200 amps, and one says 150 amps. I could find no catalog number anywhere on the panel.

According to the NEC the panelboard is the part which contains the bus and the circuit breakers. The box and cover are considered an enclosure. The cover/label/enclosure can be used with different panelboards.

… and just above that it says “see Main Breaker 200 amps MAX”. And below that it says “see Main Breaker 150 amps MAX”. And below that is says “see Main Breaker 200 amps MAX” again.

Jamin, if that’s clear to you… more power to you.

I’m gonna email Cutler Hammer tomorrow and let them explain it. At least it’s a matter of curiosity and not a safety concern that could turn into a legal issue.

The catalog numbers are on there. If it has a 150 breaker it’s the mb2040b150sd
Which means its a meter breaker 20 spaces 40 poles Breaker included surface mount with a 150 amp panel rating. I’m not sure what the D means.

This is from Eaton (cutler Hammer)

Juan,
I took a look at one of our samples here and unfortunately it doesn’t appear that we put a label with the specific part number in them. Usually, you have to assume that the bussing carries the same rating as the main breaker, In the case of a unit with a provision, whoever makes that initial decision about the main locks it in for everyone else moving forward, because that is all we have to reference.
I’m feel sure that it’s 200 amp bus for all 3 part numbers, but the** official answer has to be that it’s per the main breaker**.
Thanks,
