This picture is from a 3 year old 100 amp panel. The screw is in between the two breakers of the 100 amp main. Any idea why it is there or what it is for?

Backfed breakers need to be secured so that they can’t be removed with the simple pull that other breakers require. The reason is that the lugs (and bus clips if left in the on position) would still be hot even if the breaker was removed. Different manufacturers use a variety of methods varying from bolts or screws to special clips. The one in the photo looks normal, and should be there.
