Wind Mitigation (Florida) Concern – Are These Nails Sufficient?

Hi everyone,

I’m in the process of replacing my roof and want to confirm if the attachment in the picture meets wind mitigation requirements. I see only two nails exposed, but I assume there’s a third or even a fourth fastener underneath.

My roofer is recommending redoing the entire house’s attachment, which would add about 15% to the original quote. Does this seem necessary, or should I push back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Does that strap wrap over with another nail on the other side? If so, then it meets requirements.

If not, every single strap would need another nail, but it could save you $1500 or more per year on your insurance quote, in some cases.

I would call your insurance company and ask them what kind of savings you would get for adding a third nail, then see if it is worth paying the roofing contractor. (I would bet that it is).

Make sure to get more than one estimate from other roofers. There are also companies that specialize in correcting roof to wall connections. Do you have photo(s) of the other side of the truss(es)?

Before you give $$ to grifters, call these guys.
I think they are all over the state now

Its a genius name. I have referred them out several times, just because I remember it.

Occasionally I get brochures & bus card magnets in the mail

Talk about great timing. I’m doing a full + wind mit tomorrow on a 1985 built home and I know it doesn’t have enough of a roof to wall, even if it’s already got something. I’m going to refer these folks.

Thank you all for the feedback!

@dhorton2

I’ve attached a picture of the other side of the strap. Based on what you mentioned, I believe it does meet the wind mitigation requirements—please let me know if you agree.

Do you have any other recommendations or things I should look out for while the roof is being replaced? Really appreciate the guidance!

looks like 3 nails to me. i’d take a picture of every single one with a timestamp on it, maybe even geo location enabled and embedded. coiuldn’t hurt anyway.

Yes. That would be considered a strap. (At least 2 nails on one side, and at least one on the other).
No need to pay someone to add more, it won’t affect your insurance.

The only other thing you could do to help your rate is pay them to add an SWR. (Secondary water resistance).
But I would call insurance and ask what that difference would be.

$1.89 I imagine, since they don’t “stack” discounts too much.
