So last month I found a used Flir C5 in VERY good condition for $225 and I’ve been playing with it. My only IR camera experience is a bit unusual, as it was a tool I used in Iraq to hunt insurgents at night. Not exactly technical experience behind an IR camera. But IR camera’s have come a long way in 20 years, so now I’m looking to upgrade to better camera. Still plan on keeping the C5 in my pocket for quick use, but if I see something with the C5 but I want more, then I’d bust out the beter camera if that makes sense.
I will say I’m creature of habit, and since FLIR is what we used in the military- its just the brand I’m comfortable with, so I’m not necessarily entertaining other manufacturers, but maybe I should?
There are so many options out there (and price points). I’m trying to stay in the sub $1,800 category if possible. So any sugguestions would be appreciated. Next week I plan on tackling the NACHI Infrared Certification course, something I’m looking forward too.
My recommendation. Use the C5 for training and you will better understand your needs going forward. Generally speaking, the C5 is fine for qualitive use during a home inspection. We all want higher resolution but it comes at a price. And if you have had the opportunity to see a $30K infrared camera in use you will never be satisfied until you get one, lol. Camera envy is real.
If you can afford bit more, the E8 Pro. Maybe it goes on sale and you can get a refurbished one under $2000.
Either way, if staying in the lane of a hone inspector you will be fine. You’ll always wish or want more camera. All cameras have their limitations. Lower quality camera = much lower limitations.
