25 amp breaker w/ 12 awg wire

I don’t come across many 25 amp breakers, this one is for a well pump, double pole, with 12awg wire. Is this okay.

Maximum allowable amperage for 12 ga. is 20 amps.


That breaker should have 10 ga.

If I am not mistaken, I believe motor loads are like the A/C loads and they have to go by the nameplate rating. Not sure if they use the same minimum amp and maximum circuit rating that the HVAC uses.

Maybe one of our resident sparkies could chime in here and verify.

I think the reasoning is that some motors already have fault protection built into them, so really they are just there to protect the wire itself.

That could be true. Most of the well pumps I’ve seen have no internal OCPD.


In any event, if a data plate was not visible, I would call it over-fusing.
