I know there are recommendations for paste on branch circuit wires, what are the opinions on paste for the main feed wires?
It is not required, Steven…but, you can recommend whatever you want.
Unless the enclosure manufacturer tells you it’s required when used with AL wiring, it not required with modern AL alloy. The modern AL wiring is made not to oxidize in terminals rated for AL wire. It does not hurt to use it, but it’s not normally required.

The wire manufacturers may also call for the use, although i have never bought any cable that had instructions with it when purchased.
I agree not required. The NEC is a minimum standard so if someone uses it they are exceeding the requirements of the terminal and aluminum conductor.
