During an inspection in the basement of a vacant house this morning, I opened the ash cleanout door at the bottom of the chimney flue and found two intact rifle shells! (you’ll have to pardon me if that’s not exactly the right term- it still sounded better than “bullet-thingees” ). I couldn’t tell you what caliber, but they were a heck of a lot bigger than the .22s I used to shoot with my father. Wicked looking things, at least 3 inches long, with strange-looking tips. Armor-piercing? Hollow-point? What the heck were they doing there, anyway? Someone trying to hide evidence? Strange…

Paul,
Why don't you take a picture of them and post them here. Maybe we can tell you what caliber they are! Or you could just look on the bottom of the shell!

Joe,
I think I obliterated any markings on the ends when I started whacking them with a hammer to see if they were duds or not...

You never know when you might be held up in the basement with Feds, swat, etc, knocking at your door. Some extra ammo might come in handy
Good thing you found them. If the new owners have children that had found them whacked them as you suggested..... It would be prudent for new owners to look everywhere that more may have been stashed just incase.

Paul, Instead of wondering what caliber they are, I would tend to think along the lines of your other question, what the heck were they doing there? It’s not exactly a safe place that people would stash ammo unless they were placed there abruptly to be hidden or something. I would probably turn them over to authorities and let them decide. If it were me, I would hate to see them working on some unsolved crime and ask why I didn’t say something sooner, especially if others know you found them.
