I have been reading through as many of the floor joist questions as possible, but I have a question. I plan to use some sister joints on some floor joists that I have that are cracking/splitting. The house has a basement and it is the first floor joists that have the issue. What I also noticed was some of the joists have been notched too much on the end (see the picture below). It looks like they are notched almost 1/2 the width of the joists. Is this a situation where joist hangers would remedy any problem? So far, there have been no issues of cracking on the floor which is the tiled and the floor feels relatively solid, but I want to prevent a future problem. If joist hangers will prevent the issue, what kind of hangers do you recommend? Thank you so much!
Thank you Larry. I assume I need to be a member to post a picture? I’ve tried to post a link to a similar installation from something I found online. This is close to what my floor joists look like only mine are probably another inch notched out.
I don’t know what is behind the ledger board but maybe a nailer can be attached to flush it out in order to attach the proper joist hangers to make the structural integrity intact and safe. It also looks like they used deck screws which are not, typically, appropriate for that connection.
Thanks for the help. The framers at the house I am looking at did use nails (not the screws like in the picture above). But yes, there is some cracking occurring in some of the joists, which I assume is from the square cut notches.
I recently did an inspection on a modular home. while in the crawl space I noticed some awkward floor joist layouts. They look structurally sound, but I don’t know why it was done this way or if I should even mention it in my report.
Andrew, like larry said stack another 2x4 on of the first ledger so you can fasten your hangers, and make sure the ledger board and your boards you use to fur out with are securely fastened to the beam. and the joist you double up look for the joist hangers that open 3inches, using the joist hanger nails . Question is the other end of of the joists notched the same way sitting on a block wall?
Thank you for all your replies! I’ve got my joist hangers, 2x’s and ready to tackle this Saturday.
To your question Greg, the other end of the joists are not notched in the same way. And thankfully, most of the joists are not done this way throughout the basement, just one corner of the house (why, I have no clue)
