Approved clip configuration

I was asked to complete a wind mitigation after the owner of a house completed a retrofit for clips.

On one side of the house were these clips (bellow) that were fastened to the exterior block wall at the bottom of the strong ties.

Looking for input regarding whether these can still classify as clips.

Yes those are clips and look appropriately installed. They do stick out a bit from the wall, there is that strap rule that the straps must be within 1 inch, but I’m not sure how that would apply to these hurricane clips.

Yowzer. I guess “pretty” is not a concern here.

One question I would have is if using 2 massive bolts to anchor the strong tie is an approved installation method.

My understanding is that the multiple attachment holes and distribution of the pattern is intentional to ensure the strong tie will work as intended for distribution of force.

edit. I looked up this model of strong-tie. It comes with two pre punched holes for those bolts. So it is installed according to spec.

Still ugly tho

These are Simpson H10S clips. Biggest thing is that the install spec requires fasteners not to be exposed to the exterior. I guess because of obvious weathering and corrosion.

Those look like the right bolts for masonry. Simpson recommends stainless steel for corrosion resistance.

Wonder why the engineer placed the lower bolt so close to the edge of the block? :man_shrugging:

Yeah exactly! That’s why I initially thought it was an installation error. Didn’t look quite right.

Because that’s where the bolt holes are.
