First there is “almost” no such thing as too big… Bigger than needed is fine, smaller is a problem. From what I can see in the picture it looks like there are several Aluminum ground wires running through there. If the wiring is aluminum it must be one wire gauge larger than if it were copper… Also the old insulation is quite a bit thicker than the insulation used today even though the conductor is the same diameter… I hope you called this out as aluminum wiring and are familiar with the issues involved…

Just did a double take on the pic again and noticed the double taped breaker… Normally not the worst of things, but a different story with Aluminum wiring and even worse if one is Alum. and the other wire is Copper…

Yes I am a home inspector, and yes I do undercover electrical inspections for the government. The wires were not aluminum (night vision threw you off!). Thanks for the help, and if you were wondering I take my pictures with a small camcorder that has a “nightshot” button, ideal for dark areas!
