A few years ago I heard about a home inspector who became very ill from Bat Dung. he was of work for over a year.
My wife made me buy a filter type of Mask.
My next inspection she insisted I wear the mask . ( I had never used a mask before ).
I went into the attic and the bat dung was up to 18 inches thick in some areas. I came down and thanked her .
I now wear a mask for all attics.
What started this was I just got a phone call from a lady who had an inspection (not me).
The H.I. did not report bat dung her husband cleaned out the area in his attic did not know about bat dung (It was) and became very sick he was in bed for over one year lost about 40% of his kidney function is now an invalid and has very little strength.
This H.I. took about (She Says) 1 hour and did not inspect the attic .
He is one of the better know long standing (Agents love him) inspectors.
She is contemplating litigation .
Please HIs' wear a mask and look in the attic close, so you do not get sick our go to court.

Histoplasmosis is caused by a fungus (Histoplasma capsulatum). The disease is transmitted to humans by airborne fungus spores from soil contaminated by pigeon and starling droppings (as well as from the droppings of other birds and bats). The active and inactive roosts of blackbirds, starlings, grackles and cowbirds have also been found to be heavily contaminated with fungus spores.

I sometimes wear a small paper mask in attics as a guard against inhaling fiberglass. It sounds like I need a better mask for crawlspaces. Any recommendations?

Bill,
I have several but the one I use most is a paint and dust particle mask from HD that has pre-filter pads and replaceable cartridge filters. The costs is relatively small and takes just a few seconds to swap them out. You know when its time to change too cause it gets hard to breath if you have left them in too long. I swap mine after about 3 or 4 uses or less if I have been doing dirt floor crawl spaces. Just the proteins left behind from dead bugs is hazardous. It can trigger all kinds of allergic reactions in some people and I read you can develope allergies after prolonged exposure. Too much weird crap in peoples homes to take any chances.

Excellent Brian - they seem to be just what I was looking for. Thanks.
I notice that your from Phoenix - my brother-in-law lives there, near Squaw Peak. He was visiting and just went back today. It was interesting talking to him about the types of house you folks have out there - no basements, heat pumps, HUGE A.C. units , etc.
