Inspected a house today that had board and batten siding installed horizontally.

What are the disadvantages to this normally vertical siding? How would you report it?

The biggest disadvantage is that horizontal boards have the tendency to hold onto moisture and water (snow, ice, rain and even dew). Water will get behind the boards eventually just like a vertical board, but only faster.

Once it gets behind the strips it will start attacking the boards. Caulking the top of the strip will only be effective for a short period due to the expansion anc contraction characteristic of the wood itself.

It will be an item that needs to be monitored on a regular basis

Dan, your photo shows shiplap siding, not board and batten. B-n-b is supposed to be installed vertically just like you said.

I appreciate the input , but the picture may not be that clear. The boards do not lap one another. It is definately b-n-b siding. The detached garage to this is vertical b-n-b.
