As many of you know, NACHI has been wrestling with the idea of creating a professional designation (much like REALTORs have ABR, GRI, etc) for our industry. It would not be a different NACHI member status, but merely a professional designation. Toward that end we have Trademarked the terms “Certified Master Inspector” and “CMI”, built a CMI formula http://www.nachi.org/cmiformula.htm and a CMI exam http://www.nachi.org/cmi.htm However, NACHI as of yet, has been unable to develop formal policy on CMI.

Anyway, I will going to Washington, D.C. to attend a seminar on developing an effective policy for certification marks this month and I'm asking if anyone interested in working with me on CMI would like to join me.

Here is some info about the seminar: http://www.noca.org/news/05-2005seminarflyer.pdf

diploma mill associations out there by taking the entire profession to new heights. We don’t need any more inspectors in this field, we need better inspectors.

So if you are involved in teaching/training, work for a home inspection school, or are thinking about opening a home inspection school... I urge you to contact me nick.gromicko@nachi.org and post your intentions and thoughts here.

The seminar http://www.noca.org/news/05-2005seminarflyer.pdf is not expensive... only $80. Let me know if you want to meet me there.

Presently, you have stood fast to the historic policy of NACHI not to allow a distinction between a working or full member. Will creating a third category interfere with or create a need to abandon that policy in any way?

Additionally, how will you ensure that - for marketing purposes - the public does not distinguish a CMI of NACHI as they presently do a Full Member of ASHI? Or, conversely, a non-CMI member of NACHI as they presently do a Candidate of ASHI? Will people who visit our web site be able to choose a CMI inspector over one who is not?

If the completion of a school is the only criteria, this would probably be a non-issue. However, if it is decided to add other criteria such as number of years in business or the like, it may result in creating a negative benefit for some with a positive benefit for others.

I'm predicting that CMI will eventually be a professional designation that an inspector can earn through the completion of a course that adopts a NACHI approved CMI curriculum (much like NAR does now).

So, an inspector with 5 years of experience, being a member of NACHI, having performed over 1000 inspections, pass the level as set forth by the CMI formula, and already conforming to NACHIs continuing education policy, would also need to take an exam and/or go to a CMI school.

I think that is fair.

If a person is such a good inspector a simple test should be no problem, unless of course they are not up to date with current standards. If a person is not up to date then they are lacking I do not care if they have done 10,000 inspections.

You do not agree?

All professions should be up to date in there respective fields.

Pretty simple.

I think we should all have to pass a new and updated test every year or so, to make sure we are up to date with the current technology.
