Nice Gerry.

Gerry,

What’s your take or what’s the rule on sump pump outlets in a basement? Thanks,

BTW…Nothing in michigan is GFI protected.

Hi to all,

Chuck, personally I like to see sump pumps plugged into non GFCI dedicated single outlets in most cases.

I don’t understand your GFCI comment though?? GFCI’s are mandated in potentialy damp locations everywhere.

Todd, the list is not mine, it has been floating around for a long time, and is used by many AHJ’s

Gerry

Interesting, I guess up here in Michigan the basement is not considered a damp area. Funny, every basement leaks in MI, but 99.9 percent of sump pump outlets are not GFCI! The outlets are normally near the crock area within 3-6 feet in my experience. Oh well, do as they do I guess.

Gerry, I just found this on ecmweb.com

What about crawl spaces and unfinished areas of the basement? Once again, all 15A and 20A, 125V receptacles installed within a dwelling unit crawl space [210.8(4)] or in each unfinished portion of a basement not intended as a habitable room but used for storage or as a work area [210.8(5)], must be GFCI-protected. However, the Code does note a few exceptions to these rules: GFCI protection is not required for receptacles that are not readily accessible or are located on a dedicated branch circuit and identified for a specific cord-and-plug-connected appliance, such as a sump pump.

This explains it! Dedicated branch…etc. Hope this helps.
