Just because it can be purchased at a home depot does not mean it meets the fireplace requirements for drafting that particular fire box…
If it improves updraft why is the soot buildup on the top of the draft diverters. The draft is impeded as soot builds on the divert.
As for ember protection, I do not se any…Hm…

I am actually meeting with someone today who has been inspecting fireplace for 20+ years, is a certified technician, and I will ask about it just to be sure to cover my butt. If it does come back that it was done correctly I will apologize and possibly give a refund or pay for the technicians time. At min. I did refer her to get it checked by another certified technician so at least that is in place. I am going the extra mile to help my client though, and get more info. for myself in the process. Always learning right!

Used to see a lot of these where I grew up. Seemed work alright.
Don’t see any here and wood burning devices are all but banned here anytime of the year when you might want to use them because of air quality issues.
