Since you have a belief that tariffs will impoverish any country that enacts them, I suggest you need to hop on a plane to Shanghai or Hong Kong to witness first hand the “devastation” their protectionism has had on their country.
While there, ask around how life was 10, 20, or 30 years ago as compared to today. Many speak some level of English. If you can pry their eyes from their new Iphones that is.
Stay at the Mandarin Oriental. My favorite hotel. Visit the night market in Kowloon. Make sure you take the bullet train from the Airport in Hong Kong. It’s a fun ride since we don’t have any of those here in the land of Free Trade. The traffic though can be a problem at times. All those poor Chinese middle class in their new vehicles all seem to be going from their new apartments to their new jobs on their new roads.
Well, Nick, he would need the last person in the room to explain economics 101 to him. Many times, it seems he listens to the last person who talked him into something, that’s before he changes his mind again via a 1:00 AM tweet.
Trump has proven over and over that he is way out over his skis when it comes to anything that has to do with economics. He hasn’t a clue! But in his defense, I probably wouldn’t either if I was born into the life of luxury & money that he was. Most people who inherit $450 million dollars and hundreds of properties in New York could care less what a dozen of eggs, a car or a house costs the average American.
No. I believe that we shouldn’t use tariffs to thwart some country that is willing to sell us their hard goods made with limited resources and real human labor in return for I.O.U.s. Quite the reverse. I think in our case (which is special because we print the world’s reserver currency), we should do all we can to INCREASE the trade imbalance. Buy everything we can and print baby print!
This scam isn’t going to last long, sooner or later they’re going to catch on.
I realize this was probably meant as a quip, but if you were an exporter of manufactured goods in a profit enterprise, would you ship your products overseas for free in response to a foreign government accessing a large tariff on your products?
Not as funny as thinking we’re going to move trillions of dollars of manufacturing back to Ohio by simply denying Americans access to products that are already available and inexpensive. That’s not just funny, that’s hilarious. Trump needs to call me. He has my number.
I think in this situation, it would be an easy way using a proof by extremes for China to highlight to Americans that being able to buy dang near anything at a price that is way less than we can make it ourselves for, is not a bad thing. It’s an awesome thing. Don’t essentially ban those products with 145% tariffs. Buy them!
Anyway, if I want to sell something to some guy in China that he wants to buy, and he wants to sell something to me that I want to buy, what business is it of some politician? Politicians should stay out of our lives. Especially ones who don’t understand basic economics.
Which reminds me… where are the coats purchased from / manufactured by (Country of Origin), that you supply to children through the ‘Coats For Kids’ program?
Exactly. We’re paying $25 a piece for quality coats from oversees. If we have to start paying $75 each, we’ll be only able help 1/3 of the kids as we do now.
Perfect explanation of how intentionally seeking inefficiency harms everyone, including children.
Trump thinks he is helping us. Reminds me of a C.S. Lewis quote:
“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”
And where exactly would that be? Try answering my question this time.
Don’t forget, I am privy to your ‘mind games’ with choosing words that twist everything around to benefit you, and I refuse to play them.
Be straight for once!
Politicians should stay out of our business. If another country is efficient at making certain products and we want to buy them, why should some politician tell us we can’t transact business?
This whole thing reminds me of minimum wage. If I’m willing to pay some 16 year old kid $14/hour and he wants to work for me (and likely learn a lot) for $14/hour… why should some politician stick their nose in and tell that kid that he must remain unemployed for the summer?
I hate politicians who stick their nose between two people who want to transact business. Stay out of our lives… bureaucrat.
