For the past three years since we’re owned this home we may have seen maybe one cockroach a month inside, if that. Recently its been about one every three or four days. I now know when my wife or daughter say my name in this certain way it means “Bug”! My question; does anyone have any advice on “do it yourself” cockroach gitter ridder, other than bringing in the pros. Maybe something you’ve tried or used, kind of like an old home remedy. Something that really works. Any and all advice appreciated. Its gettin so I can’t stand the sound of my own name. thanks, mike

Mike:

You probably have palmetto bugs, also known as American Cockroaches. They are usually 3-4 inches long and 1 1/2 - 2 inches wide. They FLY!!

Go to the local Home Depot and pick up a gallons of ZEP Cockroach killer, some Spectracide Granuales, and some caulk and expansion foam.

Spray the ZEP around all door and window openings inside/outside and along all baseboards. Caulk or foam cracks and crevices and around water pipes. Drop the granuales around the outside perimeter of the home creating a ten foot barrier.

Use the ZEP monthly and the granuales every 2 months. June is the rainy season so expect to see more cockroaches running inside the property. You may also set off a flea and tick bomb in your attic when no one is home. Any eggs that have not hatched ARE NOT effected by the chemical.
Check to see if you have any leaks around the pipes. They love water.

Good Luck!

Mike,

What Jay said is sound advice. Another good product I have used in the past is a dry powder Product called “Roach-Pruff”. It is essentially boric acid. they eat it and go Poof! We fondly refer to these flying critters as “Palmetto Bugs” for the tourists sake as the thought of a 4 inch long “flying” cockroach is almost too much for some folks to bear and we want them to stay here long enough to spend all their money then go the hell home.

OH… I’m on the wrong thread. I though by the title of this thread that it was going to be a discussion about NACHI bashers who have resorted to personal attacks in their futile attempt to slow us down.

Nick,

Not really too far off. Some of the same analogies would still apply.

Your quite welcome. I forgot to mention. When you try to kill them, don't be surprised if they come flying at you when you try to hit them with a broom.

Thanks everyone, don’t even get me started on ants. I think they are only outnumbered by grains of sand.
