I’m looking for the requirements for strapping of water heaters in SZ 3&4 (such as in CA).

Can anyone tell me what UPC 510.5 says as to the material and dimensions of the straps?

I saw these nylon straps for the first time today and I don't think they meet the current standards.

Jeff…

UPC 510.5 only refers to the location of the strapping (upper and lower third) in zones 3 and 4. No mention of material.

Take a look at http://www.lafd.org/eqbook.pdf (pages 12 & 13). It's from Los Angeles Fire Dept. Straps must be approved by the California Office of the State Architect. As the one in your photo has such a tag I would suspect they are OK...assuming of course it's not a bogus tag and was installed correctly and securely. I can't think of a reason why nylon strapping would not be OK. The stuff is extremely strong, corrosion proof, doesn't stretch (in any practical application), and has to be better than the single piece of plumbers tape and a single dry-wall screw I see all too often around here.
