common flue

Just did an inspection yesterday on a 21 year old house. Exterior temp was 10F with 40 mph wind gusts. Also had 18" of fresh snow from night before. Lots of fun!

In the basement there was an oil fired hot water boiler venting into a single flue masonry chimney. On the first floor was a wood stove venting into the same single flue chimney.

Is this prohibited?

Thanks for your help.

vent into the same flue. This causes a thick cresote build-up within the flue which in turn causes fires.

Thanks for the quick response.

My code check says "No connection to gas or oil appliance vent" for wood stoves. I wasn't sure if this applied to just the metal vent pipe going into the chimney or to the chimney flue also.

Thanks again.

Last inspection I did on Sunday it was 15 below. I tried to reschedule, but the owners wouldn’t reschedule… It was a bit chilly to say the least.

I agree with David. I still have yet to inspect an oil fired furnace.

I know nothing about oil furnaces, but while researching the Nachi ‘tip’ page, I found this: http://www.nachi.org/tips/0994.gif

It appears the common flue is okay if they enter on the same floor and the wood burning stove enters below the oil connection as Paul said.
