Cut out in basement floor

Can anyone tell me why this would be here it’s about a 6 inch deep 14x14 square with nails in it and dirt under the nails.? The owners have it covered with styrofoam. Trying to figure out how to add pics im new to this forum

My first guess would be for a future bathroom. Were there pipes showing in the same area of the floor?

There was what appeared to be a capped off pipe close to it. Thank you for responding

Welcome to the forum Sharia.

Let the guessing begin!

PS: Tony, you’re stealing a seniority union job from Larry. Be careful

Looks like a bathroom rough in to me. The pit is for the shower and is where they swept the junk to.

What @asinger and @gneff said. Bathroom rough in. Very typical and common.

@swoods8 I see two random photos, do you have questions?

I tried to type the questions what is the hot box for I’ve never saw one thx for responding

Should the end of that duct be covered it’s in the ceiling?

Should the end of that duct be covered it’s in the ceiling?

I do not have enough information to answer. We would need to know what it is for. Future bathroom vent? Combustion air? Conditioned air supply or return? Dryer vent?

If you are in an unfinished basement you should be able to figure out where the duct goes and determine what it is for. If it’s in an unfinished utility type closet with only a furnace and/or water heater, it’s probably a fresh combustion air supply duct. Since we weren’t there with you, we can’t truly answer the question based on a simple photo.
As Brian stated, we would need more info.

Toilet and shower rough in.
If you’re in an area with termites, that provides a virtual highway for them to come up and eat wood (once finished).
