There are a few code issues with double taps like the one shown.

The first and the most direct is the fact that no electrical terminal shall be used for more that one conductor unless listed for that purpose.

I can say without hesitation that those terminals are not listed for use with the conductors shown.

Quote:
110.14 Electrical Connections.

(A) Terminals.
Connection of conductors to terminal parts shall ensure a thoroughly good connection without damaging the conductors and shall be made by means of pressure connectors (including set-screw type), solder lugs, or splices to flexible leads. Connection by means of wire-binding screws or studs and nuts that have upturned lugs or the equivalent shall be permitted for 10 AWG or smaller conductors.

Terminals for more than one conductor and terminals used to connect aluminum shall be so identified.

Beyond that basic and all encompassing rule there are questions of overcurrent protection for the 'tapped' conductors.

I will admit this is a common violation but it is none the less wrong and should be corrected.

Thanks Bob, that is certainly consistent with my training and experience. When the supposedly seasoned, knowledgeable other HI said it was OK I just kind of looked at him with a puzzled look and accepted his input but didn’t quite understand nor believe it.

Double and triple taps are found everywhere.

This is a picture I took just last Thursday.

There are at least 8 'extra' wires here, there is no excuse for this other than hack work.

You can see an arc mark on the buss, it seems someone messed up while live tapping this panel.
