Extended truss - question

OK so I know that a cut of a truss is a defect. The question I have is do these extensions on either end somehow make it more acceptable? I feel like the answer to that is no.

Without seeing all of the top chord, I am guessing they added the extension as a nailing surface for the drywall/finish material.

Appears to be a top-chord bearing truss with a piece of 2x added to hang drywall (like Jeff mentioned).

Structural engineer?

Why? What’s wrong with it?

My understanding is any time a truss is cut it is a defect.

But, as Simon said, Top-Chord Bearing truss with a piece of 2x added

It appears I need more education on this topic. Thank you. Because these were modified I felt there was a problem I will read more about this thanks.

Like I said in my first post…

There is no visible “cut trusses” in the photos you posted.
NEED MORE INFORMATION to confirm (or not) it is a TOP CHORD BEARING TRUSS.

Without critically looking at it. It appears to be Deadwood for drywall

Likely not cut. We cannot verify if it is a top cord bearing truss because we cannot see enough nor do we have access to design plans. But here are some examples and how they are used.

Michael, compare this picture of a top chord bearing truss. Very similar to your’s except your’s were extended for, as others mentioned, possibly future drywall. I see no problems.

Yeah, going off topic, But.

A plumber charred the wood a bit during sweating of the copper pipe, no biggie.

Point is, he wasn’t very good at sweating copper,

No, he was just fine or you would see water damage. He was, however, lazy and did not use a heat shield. Once covered with drywall, nobody is going to see it.

No, it was an amateur job, he burnt the pipes, too much heat, and solder. Blah, Blah.

Yep, Top Chord Bearing Wood Truss. Nothing wrong with it. Look closely at @srechkin picture :point_up_2: then look at the graphic below.
Top Chord Bearing Truss-1

They are built just like a steel joist just out of wood. the bottom chord need not be in contact with the wall. Extensions are typically installed to hang drywall…

Next time you go into a Home Depot or other large store with an open ceiling, look at how the roof structure is framed…
