Fiber Insulation

Does anyone know anything about this insulation. I’ve seen it before in remodeling projects over the years, but as an inspector I’d like to know more about it. Is it a fire hazard? Treated in any way for vermin or fire? It appears to be some sort of shreaded cellulose material. In this picture, the small amount of dark grey is a layer of rockwood, then a lighter color grey layer of regualar cellulose fiber and then the “blonde” layer of whatever it is!

Charles:

It appears to be blown-in cellulose fiber insulation. There are several brands on the market. Most have a chemical fire retardant added to reduce the flame spread and smoke developed rating.

Apparently it is a more recent incarnation of “balsam wool” that was common in the early 1900’s.

Hi guys,

Balsam wool that I have seen has been like 3 1/2" with vapor barrier
It does look like balsam (loose fill) with a "red head" layer. ![icon_biggrin.gif](upload://iKNGSw3qcRIEmXySa8gItY6Gczg.gif)
