Gas fireplace valve

The surrounding area in the firebox around a decorative log does not get that hot. Often I will find a plastic remote receiver within inches of the ceramic logs.

Only when a solid fuel burning has been converted (NOT retrofitted) to liquid/gas fuel burning.
A “retrofit” would be akin to adding a pre-fab insert assembly, IMO.

This is a good discussion to have as this question is asked a few times a year.

We’re about due for a sediment trap question. Drip Leg Kid where are you?

They are also optional in Minnesota.
I don’t know where you are located as you don’t have a signiture showing, but typically most northern states do not require gutters due to the issue with Ice Damming in the winter, and the common damages resulting.

Great point Martin. Same here and a good perspective going forward. But I was more concerned about the valve handle, but maybe I shouldn’t be.

I’m in Florida but from Massachusetts. Every house had gutters up north.

Having them and requiring them are two very different things!
Many Minnesota homes have them also, but it’s strictly a choice of the homeowner, NOT the AHJ!

Sure common here. And I’ve never seen a melted handle. But, most of our AHJs want an exterior shutoff within 4’ of the fireplace and in the same room, so I call it out, if I don’t see that. Since we have a wood burning ban in the metro area, we have thousands of wood to gas conversions. I am adamant about fireplace ignition in 3 or less seconds. Years ago, I was distracted by a client and had an explosive ignition. Pretty exciting and a lesson was learned.

As for gutters, required in the Denver metro area, but not out in most of the eastern plains communities. Know what your area AHJs require.
