Mine is electric as are 95% of the ones in my area. We don’t have NG here and if you want gas, you have to install a propane tank. The cost of supplying propane to a water heater is more than electricity, so I really don’t care on my end.

Since 2014 they have built many new neighborhoods in this area with gas. Many improper installations in the early stages. Some of our clients wouldn’t own a home that didn’t include gas service. Last check I think(?) gas was 1/4 the cost of propane. I calculated years ago.. a 1000 gallon propane tank would only run a full house generator for less than a week. During Irma many were without electric for over 2 weeks and you couldn’t buy a small tank of propane let alone 1000 Gallons.

My NJ house had a generac 14kw standby generator that I installed. It ran on propane.
14kw is a lot of juice and I could run everything in the house, including the 18000btu split that kept the house cool. We lived in the mountains, so it really didn’t need that much AC, but still.
We had several multi-day outages. I had a 500 gallon propane tank. On a well and septic. Didn’t run the electric dryer, but ran pretty everything else.
When it was all said and done it burned 1.02 gallons per hour average. Figure 25 gallons a day. Since the tank is never more than 80% full, and usually about 60%, I could run 10-15 days without too much drama. Less if you keep energy usage to the bare minimum. If I had expected an extended outage, I’d only run it an hour at a time to get hot water and such.
Someone once asked me how loud it was, so I made a video. heh.
I think when I did calculations (several years ago) I included AC and everything running in a typical SWFL home? AC running (max) typically 24/7. It may have been a 500 gallon tank(?), I do remember for sure at the end of it, the conclusion was that (some) folks around here with a propane backed generator during Irma ended up with having to rely on another backup or went without power for a significant period of time.

With that kind of wide spread devastation they should have rationed right from the start once the storm moved out. I would have. Run it during the hottest part of the day. Open the windows the rest of the time.
I actually considered adding a tap for some 100 gallon tanks to run mine so that I could fetch more fuel in a really extended outage but never got around to it. There is a limit as to how small of a tank can be used due to the vaporization capacity of the tank.
