Is this type of installation OK? Seems I saw somewhere that this was a safety hazard? Reference. Thanks.
Oh, I found the reference. IRC 2708.1. Funny thing is it was mistakenly omitted in IRC 2003 and put back in IRC 2006. OOps.
I have seen this written up lately in a few other inspectors reports. I just looked at the 2024 IRC 2708.1 and it does say “Hinged shower doors shall open outward”. It does not say they shall not open inward as well. It is really a safety hazard if the door swings both ways, but outward as a minimum for safety? I can understand if the door ONLY swung inwards, if they collapsed in the shower, rescue could be difficult.
No. I don’t think so.
As long as it swings out, I don’t see why both ways would be a problem.
(and to clear, we’re talking shower doors…)
